Cereal Box Marble Run
I give Joel Henriques two swissmiss thumbs up for this simple and beautiful rainy weather kids activity idea: Build a marble run out of a cereal box . What I especially love is that he made sketch first, then started building.

Why Design Contests Are Bad
Every year the world holds many contests for industrial designers. Lots of submissions, lots of time spent by jurors reviewing them, lots of pretty pictures afterwards. Fun to read, wonderful for the winners.

Artek gets a dash (just a dash) of color
When you think of Artek you think of design classics in natural colors, as the Finnish company leans towards the muted and understated; so it’s a bit of surprise that they’re splashing out on black, white, grey and even red for their quick-ship Carry Away collection. The line-up runs from Alvar Aalto’s classic Stool 60 from 1933 (top) up to Artek Studio’s Magazine/Firewood Rack from 2004 (bottom).

Sun Loungers by Harbour Outdoor
Australian outdoor manufacturer Harbour Outdoor recently opened a headquarters and distribution center in North America (Los Angeles, CA), so now we can spend all day lounging on their fantastic outdoor furniture in the US, too. While I really like all the pieces in Harbour Outdoor’s collections , I think my favorite part of each one is the sun lounger. Probably because it’s been hotter than h-e-double-hockey-sticks here on the East Coast for the past month, and all I want to do is spend my days lounging on a chaise by a pool with a frosty drink

You got your cheeseburger in my smoothie!
McDonald’s recently began selling fruit smoothies, a move that’s clearly raising the hackles of folks at Jamba Juice. The chain has kicked off a satirical campaign promoting a new product line of cheeseburger smoothies in a not-so-subtle jab at “some burger chains getting into the smoothie business.” It’s pretty funny, but I doubt this will work.

Live and direct
As some of you might know, I am @bldgblog on Twitter—but I’ve also started an account called @bldgbloglive so that I can live-tweet events, lectures, sites, interviews, panel discussions, and more without clogging up @bldgblog and driving readers insane with an avalanche of instant messages. So far, I’ve covered graduate research presentations here at the CCA given by Léa-Catherine Szacka, Zubin Singh, S
